The Artist
Anjolie Ela Menon is one of India's most celebrated contemporary painters — a figure whose work has defined the visual language of post-independence Indian art for over six decades. Born in 1940 in West Bengal and educated at Miranda House, Delhi, she travelled to Paris in the late 1950s to study printmaking under the legendary Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17, the studio that had shaped Picasso, Miró, and Giacometti.
Her signature style — Byzantine in its frontality, medieval in its gravitas — conjures haunting female figures rendered in oil on masonite. The surfaces are worked and reworked with pumice, sand, and varnish until they crack and age like ancient frescoes, as though her paintings have always existed, waiting to be uncovered rather than created.
Working in muted ochres, burnt siennas, and deep reds, Menon has built a body of work that is unmistakably her own — melancholic, luminous, and profoundly human. Her paintings hang in the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bharat Bhavan, and private collections across four continents.
"I paint the same woman over and over again — she is every woman, she is me."
